VACFSS is a non-profit society whose vision is “A balanced and harmonious Aboriginal Community.” Incorporated in 1992, we are delegated under the Child, Family and Community Services Act to provide child protection, family preservation, guardianship and resources services to urban Indigenous children and families living in the Greater Vancouver area.
On February 27 and 28, 2019, we are hosting a unique two day research conference called “Strengthening our Relations: Restoring Family within Community”. The conference will showcase innovative, culturally-based ways to support our Indigenous children and families through restorative child welfare practice. It will provide a unique opportunity for service providers, Indigenous communities, government, and academia to come together to explore ways to improve outcomes for Indigenous children and families.
We are honoured to host the internationally celebrated former Lieutenant Governor, Honourable Steven Point, and Dr. Gwen Point respected Stó:lõ leaders, mentors, and cultural advisors, and renowned expert on addictions, child development and trauma, Dr. Gabor Maté, as our keynote speakers.
Held at the Italian Cultural Centre, 3075 Slocan St, Vancouver, BC V5M 3E4
Family of Wolves.
The logo concept for the 2019 conference Strengthening our Relations: Restoring Family Within Community was designed by a 14-year-old as part of a contest organized for Vancouver Aboriginal Child and Family Services youth in care. The themes of the artwork include unity and moving forward together.
The youth’s design was informed by her Wet’suwet’en culture and her description of the concept is: “I drew a wolf pack for the logo because wolves stay together as a family and never leave each other. They look after their Elders and they are very good hunters.”
The concept submitted by the youth was honoured with the design of a united wolf family and the wolf parents wrapping their tails around the wolf child. The use of the traditional shape of a circle for iconography reinforces the idea of togetherness.
